    Newborn Hearing Screening

Can my baby hear?

Hearing loss in children is a silent and hidden disability. It could not be seen and babies could not tell us
if they are unable to hear well. Therefore, it is important to have your baby's hearing tested as early
as possible.

How common is hearing loss?

It was estimated that every 3 children in 1000 are born with congenital hearing loss bilaterally. Another 3 in 1000 will acquire hearing impairment in early childhood. (Northern & Downs, 2002)

When will my baby's hearing be screened?

The screening test is usually performed within the first few days after birth, prior to the discharge of your baby.

"All infants with hearing loss should be identified before 3 months of age and receive intervention by 6 months of age."
- Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH)

Benefits of early identification

The primary justification for early identification of hearing impairment in infants relates to the impact of hearing impairment on speech and language acquisition, school achievement and social, emotional and behavioral development.

What is newborn hearing screening?

Hearing screening programmes are developed to identify those newborns with hearing loss so that treatment and habilitative measures can be instituted.

What are the procedures involved?

  Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE).
     -  Non-invasive objective tests
     -  Relatively quick and simple tests
     -  High sensitivity and specific rates

If my child failed, are there services and facilities available for diagnosis, treatment
  and habilitation?

Yes, We do provide comprehensive hearing evaluation. Upon confirmation of hearing problems, we will plan the habilitation programme by involving our multidisciplinary team.
